This website is your source for information and announcements about the Design Burlington project. The primary purpose of the project is to re-write the city’s zoning and subdivision regulations to create a more sustainable Burlington that is an easy place to do business and a desirable place to make a life. The city’s zoning and subdivision regulations control how land can be used and how well development functions in the city. Like many communities, Burlington’s zoning and subdivision regulations were adopted in the 1970sand do not support the types of contemporary development that the community has asked for—mixed uses, redevelopment in downtown, and more livable neighborhoods. Design Burlington seeks to fulfill these requests through the following changes to the zoning and subdivision regulations:

- A new, modern unified development ordinance (or “UDO”);
- Making the new rules easier to use and follow;
- Implementing the Destination Burlington Comprehensive Plan;
- Helping create a more vibrant downtown;
- Revitalizing the city’s neighborhoods, gateways, and commercial corridors;
- Preserving the rural character of the city’s edges; and
- Creating additional flexibility and incentives to encourage new jobs, investment, and beneficial development.
